Water Filters

Commercial and residential water filters to ensure the highest quality water, including UV filters

Statistically speaking, there’s a good chance the drinking water in your area isn’t up to par.Water filters are invaluable, as water supplies can become home to all kindsof toxicsubstances–and water storage tanks are no exception. Rainwater tanks are great forharvesting rain, but not so great for filtering it. That’s because the fine particles of dirt anddebris in natural rainfall can make their way straight into your tank. Once inside, they canclog up the system and reduce its efficiency.

Rainwater is generally clean, but it can sometimes contain harmful bacteria, including E. coli, salmonella, and more. And, if left too long unchecked or unprotected, tanks can also besusceptible to the risk of vermin, rotting leaves, insects and, yes, even fecal matter.

All these contaminants can make you very sick, and while regular maintenance can helpreduce the risk, the best way to ensure clean, healthy and delicious drinking water is to usea filter. With options for every size and budget, we’ve sure to have one that suits yourneeds.

How water filters work

Different types of water filters work in different ways. Typically, a filter cartridge will capture any large particles that can affect colour and taste, such as sediment and chlorine.

Sediment filter cartridges can be made from a range of materials and offer different micron sizes, with a smaller micron able to filter smaller particles.

Chemical filters use ion exchange to remove other harmful substances.

Carbon filters have been used since the days of ancient Egypt and are a tried and tested method of water filtration. Modern carbon filters are effective at improving water taste and quality, and filtering chemicals like chlorine and gases. There are two types of carbon filters,granular-activated and solid block, and these can be used in tandem with other filters for maximum benefit.

UV filters use ultraviolet light to kill any harmful microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses and parasites that are present in your water. They’re capable of eliminating up to 99.8% of all harmful bacteria and are great for residential rainwater tanks. Relatively inexpensive and easy to install, UV water filters can be simply fitted to your tank’s outlet and are maintenance-free. When water flows out of the tank, it passes through the UV chamber, and the light wavelengths penetrate and destroy the contaminants.

Residential and commercial water filters

Residential water filters are usually smaller and more compact than commercial filters. They’re also less powerful, as they’re made for smaller rainwater tanks, with a low flow rate. But the difference goes beyond size–residential filters are designed to be installed and forgotten, with little maintenance required.

Commercial water filters, on the other hand, are usually large and powerful units. They’re designed for high output and maximum flow rates, making them capable of handling large volumes of water in a short timeframe. Often, commercial options use a combination of different filters to keep the water as clean as possible.

How do I choose the most effective rainwater filter?

Your ideal water filtration will depend on a number of factors. First, whether it’s for the home or commercial premises, it’s important to have a rough idea of the flow rate of your site. Add up your wet areas–your bathrooms, kitchens, laundries and toilets–and consider how many people will occupy the space.

As a ballpark, a smaller home with a single person or couple might have a flow rate of30L/min, whereas a large family home is more likely to be closer to 70L/min.

Think about where the best place for your water filter would be–is it more convenient to have a UV filter under the kitchen sink, or fitted to the outlet of your rainwater tank to ensure the entire supply is filtered?
