Underground Water Tanks

We can’t take water for granted in Australia, and water storage tanks are an essential part of any rainwater harvesting system.

Once you’ve got an idea of your budget and your capacity requirements, you’ll need to ask yourself – do I want an aboveground or underground rainwater tank?

As you might expect, aboveground tanks sit on the land, while underground tanks require excavating and plumbing during installation. Aboveground tanks are the most popular and most cost-effective option in WA, however, in certain situations – particularly on a larger scale – you may want to choose the underground counterpart.

With over 50 years in the industry, we know a thing or two about tanks. Here are a few reasons you might opt for an underground water tank.

Space Limitations

Number one is, quite obviously, the area required. Aboveground tanks can take up a lot of space, which is often not feasible for smaller lots (both commercial and residential). For every kilolitre (1000L) of water, you’re taking up around a cubic metre, so it adds up fast. By moving the tank underground, it remains out of sight regardless of how large it is.

Freeing up your square footage opens up the potential to use that land for myriad other purposes, and for many builds, it simply makes the most sense. Many newer homes on smaller lots that have water storage requirements may consider a smaller underground tank to be installed, say, under the garage.

At the other end of the spectrum, large commercial operations such as shopping centres may install underground tanks for the massive amounts of space that can be then used for car parks, access points and more.

Of course, keeping your tank out of sight is sometimes simply a visual preference. All those pipes, filters and then the concrete foundation itself might not be conducive to the aesthetic you’re going for.

Physical Damage

On top of exposure to the elements, underground rainwater tanks are safe from one more thing – people.

For whatever reason, aboveground tanks are a magnet for vehicle collisions, and well-trafficked areas will likely need some additional barricades for protection. Where underground rainwater tanks are just about invisible, aboveground tanks are vulnerable to vandalism, and if you’re unlucky, even theft.

Minimise Algae Growth

One final consideration is the presence of algae. In aboveground rainwater tanks, the increased heat and light can mean a higher risk of algae growth. If your tank is not sealed properly, roof runoff, insects, bird droppings, and all manner of other unpleasant things can end up in your water supply.

The lack of light and heat in an underground tank all but eliminates algae growth, meaning cleaner water, but also an increased lifespan of your equipment like pumps and valves.

Why Choose Bluewater Tanks?

As you can see, there are a few reasons you might prefer an underground water tank over aboveground. However, they do come with increased costs, during installation and then again for maintenance. If you’re having trouble deciding, it always pays to talk to the experts.

Here at Bluewater Tanks, we offer a range of underground water tanks, from 1,500L to 19,000L, with a modular capacity allowing them to be interlinked if larger capacities are necessary.
